Hanging out with an Elk: Thank you Wendy & Charlie. The house is very clean and peaceful. 3 kids upstairs right now ages 11, 9 & 3 having a blast with all the toys & they love the swing! Fishing was a bust, but we had a great time hanging out with an Elk at the 1st wet bridge.
First of all a big shout out for Charlie Palmer and his operation! I was one of four guests that joined Charlie fishing waters around the Payson area this weekend on his “East Verde Fish & Stay” deal. Charlie took great care of us; we were fed well, exposed to all sorts of new water, well guided and just in general very well taken care of. Oh,and then there’s his cabin. Friday 04/13 Left Phoenix at 4 AM. On Upper Canyon Creek @ 6 AM. No fish to be seen from the Wet Bridge up several hundred yards past the hatchery ? Does NOT look like the published stockings had taken place. Down to the Lower Section. Parked near the overturned port-o-let. Fished downstream for a couple of hours two small Browns. Back to the Wet Bridge. Met up with Charlie, Steve, Dan & Jack (all but Jack – Dan’s Dad herald from the Tucson area, Jack was out from PA to enjoy our AZ winter weather). Decided after some scouting that there weren’t any fish there so we headed to the East Verde River. Spent a great (and relatively warm) afternoon getting to know this water. Many, many trout caught. Lots of stockers and what had been sub-catchable trout stocked last year that over wintered successfully! Saturday 04/14 Storm hit @ 2 AM. Wind and hail / sleet woke me from a dead sleep. At 6:30 AM there was 5” of snow in the bed of my truck. Fished the East Verde River (several different spots) in the snow (it NEVER stopped it was still snowing at 9 PM when I turned in). I personally brought 20 to hand on Saturday. Not counting LDRs and CRs. Awesome day fishing in what was at times white out conditions. Really neat! Sunday 04/15 Decided to hit Tonto Creek since the roads were now impassable to where we’d planned to fish (further up the East Verde). The rehab work done on Tonto last year (?) is really nice. We all caught fish (I caught two small browns below 260 and two stocker rainbows above). Charlie picked up a nice 14” brown below 260. Said our farewells at 12:30 & headed down the hill. If you’d like some exposure to the small stream resources up that way drop Charlie a line. Need a place to stay consider doing the same. What a set-up. Great meeting and fishing with you all! Thanks, Scott
Guys, I certainly enjoyed your company and learning a few more fly tricks from die-hard fishers! My Dad & I had a great introduction to areas surrounding Payson - and look forward to future trips with Charlie. Wanted to pass along a couple of the pix that turned out nice.
This trip marked my introduction to trout fishing in AZ as well as my first face-to-face contact with any of the forum members. What a fantastic experience it was. Charlies' "cabin" is very nice and the streams we fished this weekend were gorgeous! I really enjoyed getting to know Scott, Charlie, Jack and Dan (the latter two we will need to recruit to the board). Fishing with people who are so dedicated to the sport and cognizant of conservation efforts was refreshing. Thanks Scott for taking so many pictures; I will definitely bring a camera next time to be sure and help in the documentation of the trip. I hope to fish with you all again sometime soon. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone and will try to make more myself.
There was plenty of room for 7 adults and we never felt like we were crowding each other. I love the almost full moon rise over the hill. You're near the river and only a few miles away is Paddle Wheel a beautiful place to hike the river. I would love to stay there again one day.
Had a great Super Bowl weekend. Might be making the same reservation next year! Thanks a ton.
Attention to Detail: Thanks for all the hard work and attention to detail. Our stay was great.
Nice People. Great Hiking!!! Thank you for sharing your cabin with us. We enjoyed our time here. Nice people and great hiking!!! Your cabin was the perfect family retreat. Thank you again.
Looking Forward To Coming Back: Thanks for a great stay at your cabin. We wish the snow wasn't melting, but we had alot of fun... Looking forward to coming back in the summer for a little fishing! Reluctantly leaving...
Much More Than We Had Expected: Things the family says: Mom:It was just perfect!Child-friendly,I really loved it. Dad:I loved that it was ready for fishing and I will be back to fish. Michael-19:I like the elk, the snow, and that it's so warm. David-14:The spongebob game is pretty awesome. Sam-13:I like how the Elk Room was bigger than the Bear Cave. The boys stayed in the Bear cave. Samara-11:Nothing to complain about except the part where we have to go home.Salome-1.5:called the snow "ba-ba" ball. I enjoyed everything.Sara-17

What A GREAT CABIN!!! Charlie and Wendy are the best! Easy EASY transaction. Cabin is fabulous we had so much fun, cooked Thanksgiving dinner for 10 no problem. Outside deck is huge, if you sit out on the deck about an hour before dusk you'll probably see members of the resident Elk heard. We Did! Neighbors are friendly surrounding scenery is fantastic. Cabin has the weather for 5300 ft. but scenery is more like 7000 ft. Lots of Pines... we will definitely be staying at the cabin many times this next year!

Awesome Cabin, Highly Recommend!!! We loved this cabin! Our stay here was jammed packed with adventure! We hiked the Pine Creek Trail at the Tonto State Park to see the natural bridge. The trail was beautiful and extremely steep and the natural bridge was just incredible. It's a must see! My daughter and husband loved fishing in the beautiful East Verde River which was right across from the cabin and down the road at the wet bridge. The first night while roasting marshmallows by the fire, we were visited by four majestic elk in the backyard and fortunately they grazed in neighbor's yard. Oh course our camera didn’t work so we did not get pictures. Sounds like a big fish story, eh? Fortunately we all saw them. What a sight! The cabin has all the comforts of home and everything and more than you need! The cabin is extremely clean, well maintained and oh so comfortable. Our daughter loved the bunk beds and put together the Sponge Bob puzzle three times! Raindance, our Great Dane loved the sunny deck and the big yard. We can't say enough good things about our stay, it was so much more than expected! Thank you so much for sharing your cabin with us! We hope to come back soon!

5 Guy Fishing Group. East Verde Hold Overs and Canyon Creek Browns Oct 7th - 9th Had a great 3 day weekend on the Rim... Friday started out a little interesting when we were fishing in Heavy Snow Conditions on Canyon Creek! Took a Video of it.... it was cool. Saturday we got back to more “Fall” type weather. We headed to the East Verde from Cabin, and Hiked Down from Second Bridge to get into some of the Larger Pools. It turned out well worth it!! I was the only “Fly Fisher” of the group, I landed about 15 Fish in 3 hours sizes ranged from 3.5 inch Fingerling trout that stocked at the end of August up to 14 inch Rainbows. I did well using a #6 CH Brown Crystal Bugger with a size 16 Flashback Hares Ear nymph tied about 12 inches behind the bugger. The rest of the guys were using Silver Colored Spinners and did very well on them too with Fish in the same size range as mention above. Also, on a side note the flow was still on from Blue Ridge. Here is a link if you should ever want to check it before heading out to Fish the East Verde: http://www.watershedmonitor.com/Line...erde&rngtyp=7d Sunday morning I fished up above the diversion on the East Verde and to my suprise it was quite good. The flow is much lower and not every pool is fishable but I found using the same setup as I mentioned above, putting a Strike indicator about 18 inches above the Bugger and drifting it past the many boulders in the lanes of the stream would produce some nice size fish for the size of the water. 10 – 12 inch avg. I fished the East Verde up to the Washington State Park Camp Areas.. It was fun and I will be doing that again... I can see that water being excellent early April time frame(more water) At Noon, my spinner friends , headed back to the Valley and I went to Canyon Creek to Fish catch and release section. Water was clear and lower then the last time I was there. Which made for tough fishing, one false cast or shadow cast across the stream and it was all over for that hole. I did have a good afternoon there , no 20 inchers but lots of 10 – 14 inch browns. Most were caught on size 16 Parachute Adams.. Overall a fun weekend and I look forward to next trip in a couple of weeks.
Heavenly. I am so happy I went on an adventure to this heavenly place... Everything that they advertise is true, but the one thing they left out is how very prompt and wonderful they are!! I got to bring my dog, he hates home now!!! The streams are majical and soothing to the soul... We saw deer and elk with their babies.. We drove to fossil springs, and hiked waterwheel... I cannot tell you how badly We wanted to stay... The cabin is white glove clean, and everything you could ever need was there ....I hate home now too.. Mackies diner lets you bring your dog to eat with you on the porch, he is forever spoiled.. Cannot wait to return.........
We had a fabulous time at your cabin--it was great weather-nice and cool in the evening. I will make sure I put a post on VRBO. The boys caught their first fish and we loved the natural bridge. Your place is awesome--thanks so much for all the goodies you have there-the crib, toys and videos were all a huge hit!! We hope to be able to come back again.
Great Owners, Great Cabin. We had a terrific stay and Charlie and Wendy's cabin. They have everything you need, including games, movies, wi fi, and room for the entire family. There are toys for the young ones if you have them, and the cabin is big enough for the entire family, and a fenced yard for the dog. Charlie and Wendy are extremely responsive, and answer any questions you might have right away. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get away to the cool pines.
Whispering Pines should be on everyone's agenda. Dear Charlie and Wendy, We were sorry we had forgetten our cameras to record our two-night stay at your cabin. It was wonderful and more than we had expected. The cabin had everything! Hard to think of anything to add or change. Enjoyed the decor that put a smile in every room. We had planned to do a little fishing but needed to just relax which we did. Thursday and Friday afternoons we had a little rain with lighting and thunder which we enjoyed on the porch. Very pleasant to see and feel. (Wish we had some rain in Phoenix like that.) We were sorry the overhang was not a little longer but then it was time to come in out of the rain. We enjoyed driving in the neighborhood and spotting a female elk eating from an apple tree. We walked across the street and enjoyed our little trek after the refreshing rain. We appreciated the folder with the maps, etc. and took a very pleasant ride to Tonto Natural Bridge and Pine. For two seniors, 78 and 80, taking a break in Whispering Pines in Payson should be on everyone's agenda. Thanks again for beautiful accommodations in a very fabulous cabin in Arizona. Hope to do it again. Thanks, Grace and Bob
I highly recommend this cabin and services. The cabin is comfortable, clean, well maintained, well appointed with amenities, and beyond expectations. It is located within a 100 yards of the East Verde, 20 min to Tonto (Brown Trout Fishery) & Horton Creek. Its within an hour of Canyon, Haigler, Christopher, Chevelon Creek, Bear Canyon, Willow Springs Lake and more. One thing you won't find at other vacation cabins in the Payson area is the wealth of fishing knowledge that Charlie, the owner provides. There is advice in the binder at the cabin on fishing locations and flies/techniques to use. Charlie is happy to answer any questions a client may have about fishing and other activities in the area. He can provide flies and equipment at the best price I have found, and is a licensed guide in Arizona with many years of experience. Fishing while staying at the cabin was greatly enhanced with Charlies help. I recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to be centrally located to great fishing, hiking, and hunting without sacrificing a hot shower, comfortable bed, and TV. We had pancakes at the firehouse on Houston Mesa road for a small donation and mostly ate fish at the creek side with a portable Coleman grill.
nicely furnished. Thanks, Charlie. We enjoyed staying at your place. Very nicely furnished. I did some fishing... just not the catching part but it was fun.
Wonderful Cabin / Wonderful People. My husband and I just returned home from a wonderful three night stay at Charlie and Wendy's cabin. We consider ourselves very lucky to have found this place just days before our scheduled mini vacation. I called and talked to Wendy before I booked and she was extremely helpful in answering all my questions. In addition, Charlie called and talked to me several times as I worked to book a fly fishing outing for my husband. He patiently answered all my questions and provided the utmost care and professional lessons during the fishing outing. We found the cabin to be very comfortable and inviting filled with many DVDs, books, games and reading materials. The owners have thought of everything from baking dishes to soft towels, to portable chairs and dog toys. Additionally the neighborhood is dog friendly. I met several neighbors walking their dogs early in the morning, while I sat and sipped on my coffee on the deck watching the sunrise over the tops of the pines. My dog Maggie had a blast playing with the neighbor dogs in the fenced yard. Hiking, fishing, walking and bird watching are just steps away from your front door. Take some time to walk up Neal Dr at the end of the street and catch a glimpse of the Rim. Spectacular!!! And if you want to experience a great adventure, take some fly fishing lessons from Charlie. The trout you will catch are DELICIOUS!! The cabin has a great grill and all the essentials to make your meal a feast. However, if you are not in the mood for cooking, head into town and take in a bite at the "Beeline Cafe" where you can get a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and a salad or soup for $9. The chicken noodle soup will comfort your soul the homemade fruit pies will melt in your mouth. Your drive to and from the cabin (10 miles) will provide you with some of the most beautiful and colorful views of the pine country (sunset provides best views). Take some time to pull over before or after the wet bridges and smell the pines, listen to the river and sit still as the giant elk feed near by and the heron fly overhead. You will also see Elk at the cabin as they come and feed on the apple trees nearby. If you are at the cabin at the right time of year, treat yourself to some of those apples. YUM! Our mini vacation was very relaxing and enjoyable in this wonderful cabin in the pines. Wendy and Charlie have taken great care to provide a welcoming and comfortable pet friendly home away from home. BRAVO!
5 stars and more. We rent from VRBO several times a year and this rental was amazing. The owners were incredibly helpful and put so much effort into this home. It is beautiful and compares to a five star resort. Endless activities such as movies, games, fishing, horseshoes and more. We didn't have time to be bored. The home has themed rooms and the most comfortable sofa and chairs you will ever sit in. Our kids three kids enjoyed the river and to open the windows and hear the water flow is so relaxing. The neighbors in the area are extremely friendly. We had a fabulous time Thank you both for welcoming our family into your home away from home.
Thank you thank you thank you. We had such a wonderful time at this home. It was not only beautiful and stocked with all we needed but the kids toys and the hiking backpack were so welcoming and really an added bonus. I never thought I could actually relax with two toddlers but they truly enjoyed the creek and the toys and we got to relax. Thank you so much for a great experience.
River Cabin Getaway. My wife and I just returned home after a very relaxing week at this cabin outside Payson. The owners put a lot of effort into making the cabin both comfortable and functional, with lots of entertainment and activity options. When not out fishing (streams and nearby lakes are stocked from spring until fall), hiking or exploring the area (don't miss Tonto natural bridge), you can access high-speed internet or watch HDTV with Netflix and Pandora also available. There's a good selection of DVD's, books, magazines, puzzles and games also. There are many dining options in Payson (we liked Fargo's for last night dinner), but we had almost all our meals at the cabin. The kitchen is well-furnished, and having a gas grill on the front deck makes it even better. Everything at the cabin worked as expected, and we had no issues with cleanliness or housekeeping. The owners were very helpful in answering a couple of questions we had, and we have already recommended the cabin to friends as a relaxing getaway.
FABULOUS Cabin!!!! We just returned home from a two night stay at this cabin. It was FABULOUS!!!! The cabin is extremely clean, well-furnished, and well-maintained. It had everything we needed in the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and outside deck. It is nicely decorated and we were very comfortable. The cabin is better than as described in the website posting. It is a BEAUTIFUL property!!! Working with the owners was easy and a pleasant experience. They were available to answer questions during our stay. And, our deposit was promptly returned at the end of our stay. We met several of the neighbors and everyone was friendly and helpful. It was a fun couple of days!! We absolutely will be returning to stay at this cabin. Soon!!!
Charlie's Cabin Review ---- Last weekend my wife and I stayed at Charlie's cabin and I thought that I would write a quick review for those who are considering staying there. The location is very nice. It is in a nice quiet place that makes it easy to get to all our favorite rim streams. It is close enough to town that my wife and I could head in for a nice dinner each night but far enough away that we could sit on the front porch and star gaze while enjoying a glass of wine. The cabin is well done. The pictures Charlie has posted really do not give the cabin justice. Charlie and his wife really did put a lot of thought and care into the cabin. Although I do think they may have gone a little overboard I mean who needs umbrellas in AZ??? Jokes aside they really did a great job of furnishing and providing all that you will need for an enjoyable weekend of fishing, a family outing, or a weekend get away with your wife. The fishing: There are a couple stocking points within a 10 minutes of the cabin and they got little pressure from what I could see that day which was surprising. I got to hit the morning and evening bite and caught 15; including a couple of nice holdovers which was fun on a 3 wt. Unfortunately my wife got sick so I didn't get to do much exploring but the little bit that I did on the East Verde were encouraging enough to make a return trip. Service: I don't know how important customer service is for you but for me it is priority one. Charlie went above and beyond what you would expect for a rental cabin. My wife continually commented on what a good job Charlie and his wife had done. At one point we thought we were going to have our kids with us so Charlie looked up the local swimming pool for us and made the trip up to stock the cabine with kid movies, games and toys. Charlie really put out the effort to make sure that our weekend was everything we wanted and for that his cabin will get first consideration when we are thinking about getting up in the woods and out of town.
Staying at Charlie's cabin and loving the East Verde! ----I'm staying at Charlie's cabin with my wife and baby. Caught 12 very nice rainbows in the past two days - 5 of which were caught right across the street!! Check out the industrial forum and the cabin thread for details on the cabin. It's basically an amateur fly fisherman's heaven up here. Here's some fish pics. Two of the fish were pigs at 15+ inches and fat. Way bigger than my normal catches. You are going to have a blast. Lots of good spots right across the street from the cabin. The wet bridges are really good too. Caught an even 30 in 4 days. Lost probably another 15. There is one very large trout at the first wetbridge with my hopper in its mouth. Had him on the rim of the net when the tippit snapped. Size range was 10-16+". Some really strong and fiesty fish in the East Verde! Best fishing I've had in a long, long time. Will post some more pics later on. Krystal wooly buggers (with and w/o a midge or CJ in trail), hopper dropper (midge or CJ), parachute adams and midge...had luck with everything Charlie recommended.
We didn't want to leave. They had to kick us out late Sunday night (not really - Charlie and his wife are very gracious people - but we did stay until very late). The place is GORGEOUS - beautiful scenery, nice cabin tastefully furnished and decorated, big stream with lots of flowing water very close by, and I hear that the fishing is really good, too.
I had no idea that Payson was this beautiful. I've only driven through it on the way to other places. Now I know it can be a destination. I'm looking forward to return trips and staying at this place!!!
Thanks for the good time, good food, and new friendship!!!
